12/25/2022 0 Comments Deer hunter vr![]() I've only shot one deer with my 6.8 and the Barnes TSX in a reload of mine. I personally like the Grendel round better for hunting, but I haven't got one because of the real spotty availibility of ammo/brass/uppers. Lots of availibilty of stuff for 6.8, pretty scarce availibility of Grendel stuff. 1000 ft/lbs of energy is generally accepted as the minimum energy required to take deer efficiently/humanely. The 16 inch Grendel will take you to about 300yards with 1000 ft/lbs of energy using 130gr Swift Scirocco's and the 16 inch 6.8 to about 200 yards with 1000 ft/lbs the 110gr Barnes TSX (using the standard SAAMI chambered 6.8 barrels) - both in handloads. ![]() I don't build so I am looking into an already existing complete uppers out there. I have been looking at the Hunter version of the 6.5 Grendel but if the 16 inch upper (which also cheaper) can handle this competently, I'll look into the 16. So my question is: Is the 6.5 Grendel (or even 6.8 SPC) in 16 inch length barrel capable meeting my criteria? I am simply looking to use it to hunt and drop feral hogs and deer between 75-250 yards tops. I have been debating between either 6.8 spc or 6.5 Grendel. 223 uppers, I can experiment with different lengths, and thus weights, to see which one I would most like to carry with my Jet titanium suppressor (which, BTW adds to both accuracy and velocity). It is reliably producing groups (out of a lowly Model 1 sales M4gery, 16 ") of 1 inch at 115 yards. Ammo supply is not a problem for me at all. 223's BUTT!, does not recoil much, and has a wonderful trajectory. I also am going to buy either the Kotonics 18 inch or a 24" barrel, to get maximum velocity, as I have fallen in love with the 6.8 SPC cartridge. Your velocity is likely to be around 2550 to 2650. These expanded beautifully on a small spike and the deer went down in about 30 yards. Your best bet it so go with the Remington Core-lokt ultra bonded, in 115 grains, or the sierra prohunter for deer. It works great for pigs, though,as they are "double tough". I suspect that the barnes does not reliably expand on such thin skinned game, and thus, I now longer use it for deer. I shot one deer in the lungs with the SSA 110Gr Barnes X, expecting this to be the best bullet, but the deer went about 200 yards before we found it. If shot is placed in the head, the 6.8 SPC with almost any bullet, puts them down like a ragdoll. I have used the 16 inch barrel with both deer and hogs.
